Patience Agbabi FRSL est une poétesse, performeuse et romancière reconnue. Depuis plus de trente ans, elle célèbre la littérature écrite et orale à travers le monde. Son travail donne souvent une voix à ceux qu’on entend peu, en abolissant les frontières entre page et scène, art savant et culture populaire, poésie et prose ; elle accorde autant d’importance à la forme qu’à l’énergie de la performance.

Elle a étudié la langue et la littérature anglaises à l’Université d’Oxford et est titulaire d’un master, obtenu avec mention, en écriture créative, arts et éducation à l’Université du Sussex. En 2017, elle a été élue membre de la Royal Society of Literature.

Depuis 2008, elle est Fellow en écriture créative à l’Université Oxford Brookes. Elle possède également trente ans d’expérience dans l’animation d’ateliers en lycées, à tous les niveaux. Avec les élèves de Sixth Form, elle travaille notamment sur certains Contes de Canterbury ou sur son poème Eat Me, au programme du A Level de littérature anglaise du jury Edexcel.

Ses recueils de poésie comprennent R.A.W. (Gecko Press, 1995), Transformatrix (Canongate, 2000), Bloodshot Monochrome (Canongate, 2008) et Telling Tales (Canongate, 2014). Elle a été « Canterbury Laureate » de 2009 à 2010 et a reçu une subvention pour les arts ainsi qu’un soutien de la Fondation des auteurs pour écrire une version contemporaine des Contes de Canterbury. Telling Tales a été finaliste du Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry 2014 et du Wales Book of the Year 2015.

Le premier roman jeunesse d’Agbabi, The Infinite (Canongate, 2020), a inauguré The Leap Cycle, une série d’aventures temporelles mettant en scène un héros britannico-nigérian neuroatypique. Le roman a été finaliste du prix Arthur C. Clarke et a remporté le Wales Book of the Year dans la catégorie « Enfants et jeunes » en 2021. Il a été suivi de The Time-Thief (2021) et The Circle Breakers (2023). Le dernier volume, The Past Master, est paru en février 2024.

Patience Agbabi FRSL is a sought-after poet, performer, and novelist. She has spent over 30 years celebrating the written and spoken word all over the world. Her work often gives voice to the voiceless, bridging the gap between page and stage, high art and popular culture, poetry and prose; paying equal attention to formal structure and the dynamic of performance.

She read English Language and Literature at Oxford University and has an MA with distinction in Creative Writing, the Arts and Education from the University of Sussex. In 2017, Agbabi became a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

Since 2008, she has been a Fellow in Creative Writing at Oxford Brookes University. Additionally, she has 30 years’ experience delivering workshops in secondary schools at all levels. Her Sixth Form work focuses on specific Canterbury Tales or her poem Eat Me, a set text for A’ Level English Literature on the Edexcel Exam Board.

Her poetry collections are: R.A.W. (Gecko Press, 1995), Transformatrix (Canongate, 2000), Bloodshot Monochrome (Canongate, 2008) and Telling Tales (Canongate 2014). She was Canterbury Laureate from 2009 to 2010 and received a Grant for the Arts and an Authors Foundation Grant to write a contemporary version of The Canterbury Tales. Telling Tales was shortlisted for the 2014 Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry and Wales Book of the Year 2015.

Agbabi’s debut middle-grade novel The Infinite (Canongate, 2020), launched The Leap Cycle, a time-travel adventure series featuring a British Nigerian neurodivergent hero. This was shortlisted for the Arthur C. Clarke Award and won Wales Book of the Year: Children & Young People category in 2021. It was followed by The Time-Thief (2021) and The Circle Breakers (2023).
